Waste Management
To keep the amount of waste we generate to a minimum we ask our suppliers to deliver goods in recycled packaging where possible. Some of the packaging arrives in reusable plastic containers which are sent back to suppliers saving on huge amounts of packaging waste. All our new procurement contracts include returnable packaging as part of the contract.
Not content with this we are investigating further ways to reduce our waste generation. An environwise “Designtrak” report has been commissioned to look into the possibility of using recycled cardboard generated by the manufacturing site to be converted into pulp internal packaging for our domestic product ranges.
For the waste that is generated at Nuaire, as much as possible is recycled. Last year, of the 807 tonnes of waste that was produced, 90% was recycled.
As part of our ongoing commitment to reduce the amount of waste we create, we set specific objectives to reduce waste to landfill.
In 2006 this equated to 110 tonnes, in 2007 it was reduced to 74 tonnes. Initiatives have already been implemented to divert plastic packaging from landfill which will reduce the total by a further 13.5% thanks to the installation of a plastic bailing machine.
List of statements of our achievements:
- Paper 19 tonnes (recycled)
- Metals 393 tonnes (recycled)
- Hazardous waste 9 tonnes (recycled)
- Wood 240 tonnes (recycled)
- Cardboard 72 tonnes (recycled)
- Plastic cups 250 kg (recycled)
